Watch this to see what mistakes I made so you don’t have to. I am an absolute beginner so I’m not teaching, I’m just showing what I did and hopefully the comment section will be a wealth of advice. But this video is just a side quest. I’m a bronze smith and I will continue to make bronze smithing content. Not prospecting content.

Making a Dune Crysknife: 3D Print to Bronze

This was another example of lost resin casting, just in time for Dune part 2. I did my best to do a sand casting but it just wasn't working. So I went from sand casting to lost resin casting. I used Siraya Tech True blue castable resin. The Crysknife is an important part of the movie. As cool as the 3D print is I think that casting it in bronze makes it much cooler.

    Great video! I have a small collection of bronze bears and other animals so it's nice to see how they're made. Some have very nice paint that was applied in a special way but I've read the technique has been lost. ( Bergman bronzes ) some are over 100 years old.

    Must duplicate it exactly. Don't make up your own hole pattern. Use lots of photos of existing versions. Suppose it was a modern single flat plate with the same holes. Then obviously its for creating wood dowels of various sizes. Hammer a rough-carved stick through it to get started, then later just yank it through each smaller aperture. If they were scattered all over, mostly in remote military camps and not in cities, then they'd be for "mass production" of arrow shafts, not just for any smooth dowels. Any giant ones? Those are for making smooth spears.

    reducing ANY metal to a molten state will release fumes that you really do not want to be anywhere near if you intend on living into retirement in good health. ALWAYS use extraction, and ALWAYS use breathing protection equipment such as forced air hoods with filters!!

    A very cool video, well done. Of course there are a small number of "cheats" involved here - I'm no expert but I'd wager a reasonably tidy sum the Romans didn't have 3D printers, plastic or power tools, but no matter the video makes clear there is both a lot of skill and a lot of work involved in making this thing even with modern tools. As to what this thing was for why not ask the question "Why did Lungdron make this thing?" Well, probably to prove to himself, and to others, that he could. A test of skill in his craft. One might easily imagine a Roman metal craftsman in 400AD noticing a competitor in another town on a visit who had one of these things sitting prominently on a plinth in his shop window. It says "Hey guys, if I can make this you can be sure I can make anything you want to the best possible quality and precision!". So the dude goes home and tries to make one himself for his shop window. So there you have it, another hypothesis for the origins of this mysterious object: it's basically an advertisement that gradually became a meme in Roman metal crafting circles around 300-400AD.

    Its a candle holder, allows for different sized candles as there was no EU standards in those days - candle sizes varied from candlemaker to candlemaker, town to town. Even fill it with wax - put a wick in it for more or less light.. Solved.

      @mikev4621 2 дні тому

      I think this is one explanation. Very important not to start house fires with unsupported candles , or candles in holes too big to hold them up straight

    I've been casting as a hobby for about 40 years and have done sand and investment, aluminum, brass, bronze, and zinc (ZA-27) alloys. You did an excellent job of hitting all of the high points, including how exciting things get when there is a little water present. (Another thing to watch for is that your crucible is in good shape, it can be quite exciting when the bottom of a crucible falls out and several pounds of molten bronze suddenly escapes.) One clarification - it isn't that aluminum cans, extrusions, and wire are lower quality, but the alloys were designed for something else so they are are less suitable for casting. You are correct that using previously cast items as feedstock will give the best results. A couple of earlier commenters mentioned that magnesium should be avoided when casting aluminum. That's true. I don't know how common it is to find in scrap piles today, but a generation or two ago everyone knew to avoid VW beetle engine and transmission cases and a McCulloch single cylinder gas engines which were cast from magnesium. With aluminum alloy wheels being so common these days, wheelium is an excellent source of material.

    Have you replicated a whorl? ... a drop spindle whorl? ... a high tech drop spindle whorl designed to function with a set of 6 tapered spindles for drafting 6 different weights of thread from a distaff holding a mass of unspun fibers? The whorl adds a stabilizing weight to the spindle and the spherical array of rounded nubs add a smooth tread for rolling the dangling whorl between the solitary weaver's hand and thigh, or between the hands of an assistant.

    We used to use plaster of paris mixed with grog (crushed clay pots) in the art foundry I worked in. Moulds would bake for 24 - 48 hours (kiln was approx 1.5m cube). They do crack, but as they cool the cracks shrink, get it right and they won't show in castings. Also, on larger moulds, make sure you wrap with scrim and plaster of paris cases see ua-cam.com/video/JTQqFdDWYUw/v-deo.html
